Special Session on Power Line Communication and Smart Grids

PDF File: Special Session on Power Line Communication and Smart Grids

The smart grid technologies are rapidly emerging due to developing power transmission grids. The demands directed to a smart grid are remote sensing, communication, control, monitoring, and analysis processes. The smart grid should also meet these requirements in a sustainable and reliable ways. The smart grid applications can be performed in wired or wireless data communications. Power Line Communications (PLC) is based on the idea of transmitting data by using the electrical wires originally designed for electrical energy delivery. It follows that PLC offers a convenient and inexpensive medium for data transmission and it has many fields of applications as in the smart home area, vehicles, energy metering, etc. Therefore, the PLC technology is a very attractive research area; nevertheless, it still faces difficult challenges since power lines are not designed for communication purposes. On the other hand, the wireless technologies alternatively used in smart grid are Wi-Fi, WiMAX, Zigbee, Bluetooth, etc. In this special session, emerging technologies and advanced design and modelling studies on “Power Line Communication and Smart Grids” will be discussed.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  •  Intelligent grid management and control
  •  Power line communication models and applications
  •  Grid security and stability
  •  Smart protection, fault detection and prediction
  •  Modelling, simulation and optimization
  •  Advanced metering infrastructure designs
  •  Smart metering systems and customer participation
  •  Information and communication systems
  •  Smart grids for integrated renewable energy
  •  Smart grid components
  •  Smart grid applications and Services
  •  Online/real-time monitoring and intelligent control on power line
